2.2. I'm in Los Angeles! (Continued)

Before I left for LA, various acquaintances threatened me that Los Angeles was a very scary place.  Therefore, I thought that all the people who pass each other I was suspicious that they were dangerous guys like gangsters.  I think that my eyes must have been abnormally bloody.

If you see me at that time, you would say “What is this Japanese guy?  Why are you walking like a crab along the wall?”.

Actually, there was only one employee at the Los Angeles branch office after my predecessor would have returned to Japan, I was the only one in the field. Therefore, from the early morning of the next day, the very hard jobs were carried out.

To start a new life in Los Angeles, first of all, I had to take "Social security number."  This number is like a uniform number assigned to each person and it is necessary when paying taxes. Without this one, I would not be able to open a bank account and I would not work there, either.  Therefore, I would have to go to a security office at the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and La Brea Boulevard.  “Abbreviation”  I brought an international driver's license from Japan, but the length of the license number was very (incredible) long.  I guess that almost people would say "How many digits are there in it?” So it's not suitable for use as an ID material.

In the United States, a driver's license is used more often than in Japan as identification.  So, I thought that it was necessary for me to obtain the license to use in this town.

In Tokyo, although I had a driver's license, I did not drive at all.  Therefore, I had to a get a driver’s license for business purposes as early as I can.  The first challenge in living in Los Angeles was to be able to drive a car freely before I could use English freely.

It was a very difficult thing for me to drive a car in Los Angeles.  Because the driving road was on the right side and the steering wheel of the car was on the left side.  This is exacly the opposite of Japan.  In spite of that, the business-takeover period was only two weeks, in the meantime, I had to be able to drive freely.

Therefore, on my first weekend in Los Angeles, I rented a car and practiced driving alone all day long.  However, I was only able to go straight,

When I rented a small red car at a rent-a-car store, I tried to enter into the road from the parking of the rent-a-car store and I was so scared.  So, I had to wait until there are no other cars around mine and I waited for a good time in order to turn the handle.  Probably  I kept on waiting for the timing for one or two minutes.  The clerk at the rental car store worried about the status of its engine and he came out of the store.  At the same time, the signal has been changed at the moment, so I could enter into the road somehow.    However,  so I could not turn the handle as I was so scared.  Anyway, I had to get used to driving, so I had to drive straight anyway.

I could only go straight.  So I have kept on driving down from North to South on La Cienega Boulevard for about 40 minutes,  so I thought it would be worse if I kept on going straight at this pace and I would be in the town of San Diego several hours later.   In order to avoid the worst case, I thought that I should turn the left at the next signal.  Even if I was able to turn left,  I could only go straight.  So, I would drive across the city of Los Angeles from La Cienega (left) to Downtown (right) and my car ran and ran straight through the middle road of Los Angeles.

After driving quite a bit, I entered an area with many high-rise buildings and I was in the town where many skyscrapers were lined up, so I thought that this must be the business district of Los Angeles, downtown.           ( When you practice driving a car in LA at first, you have to buy a map and then bring it in the car !! )

In the situation where you are in downtown even though you can only run straight, how long have you been running straight?

"I'm driving through the city of Los Angeles!!"  But that was also the moment when the old wishes came true.  Although I was a hectic driver who could only go straight, I was so happy and had a sense of accomplishment.  I thought that "I may be a pretty big guy!".  But, simultaneously,I thought that my car would not be able to turn for the rest of my life.

I was so satisfied with that situation, but the car passed through Downtown Area which may be very near from Little Tokyo and just kept going straight, but in the middle of the city where some rough houses became to line up.  I guessed,"Is this town where everyone said they should not go because it's dangerous?"

I didn't have a map, so I couldn't find out which town I was passing at the moment.  "Where am I now?"

I left the rental car shop at 11:00. Looking at the car clock, it was already 4 o'clock. I've been running straight for 5 hours on the road of Los Angeles without eating any foods. When I noticed that I had been running for a long time, I suddenly wanted to go to the bathroom, but since I have come to an area that I heard was quite dangerous in Los Angeles.  If possible, I wanted to rent a toilet somewhere as soon as possible.  But if I come across gangsters at the store I rented a toilet, I would may have a very hard time.  So I gave up going a toilet instantly.  And I decided to tell myself,   "You are a decent adult person.  You can have a leak it in the car !!, my jeans and underwears would get wet. That's it!!. That's what adults judge!!!"  I finally decided to turn the steering wheel to return to the center of Los Angeles. "It doesn't matter if it leaks."

For the first time, I saw a beautiful sunset in LA and I felt that the wind was very comfortable.  However,

my jeans and underwear were nicely moisturized, but even that felt good, good! !!
